Wednesday was a very emotional day for the Dutch royal family. Queen Beatrix, the Prince of Orange, Princess Máxima, Princess Mabel, Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien were present at the presentation of the Prince Claus Prize 2012 at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam.
For Princess Mabel it was her first official engagement in the Netherlands since the avelanche accident of her husband Prince Friso in February. He has been in a coma ever since. It was the same event that in 2011 was Frisos last official engagement. Mabel must have had a very difficult day, but it was very brave of her to attend. Luckily she was supported by the whole family of her husband.
It was also Prince Friso who should have presented this year’s prizes. He and his brother Prince Constantijn are the chairmen of the prize, and present the prize in turn. Emotionally Constantijn mentioned in his speech: “Take that podium. It is functionally useless as I am standing over here. It becomes an obsolete obstacle that we can now observe differently. We cover the thing in flowers as if it were a monument. It also could be the pedestal for a piece of art. For me – on this occasion – it symbolizes the empty space where my brother should have been standing.”
